WATER,
THE NEW GOLD
June 7 – September 29, 2024
Cc Scharpoord, Knokke-Heist
THE BEAUTY & SCARCITY OF WATER
The photo exhibition WATER explores the complex relationship between humanity and water: a fundamental part of our bodies, an essential resource for our lives—and for the life of our planet. Indispensable and vital, water is the most precious liquid; the new gold.
Edward Burtynsky’s abstract photographs, sometimes elegant, sometimes haunting, hover between the realms of painting and photography, creating a captivating portrait of water that raises open questions about humanity’s connection with nature.
"Whenever water is taken out of its natural cycle, there is always a winner and a loser. The one it flows to is the winner, and the one who lacks that water is the loser."
Edward Burtynsky
PHOTO EXHIBITION
WATER THROUGH BURTYNSKY’S LENS
"I wanted to understand water, as well as our use and misuse of it. The images show evidence of global thirst and threatened resources. The landscapes I document are clearly not vistas of an inexhaustible, sustainable world."
Edward Burtynsky
Internationally acclaimed Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky traveled across five continents. From the Gulf of Mexico to the banks of the Ganges, he captured the life cycle of water. He followed the paths of rivers, studied the seas, and even explored beneath the surface—a signature approach of his.
The exhibition is organized into six chapters: In Distress, Control, Agriculture, Hydro-culture, Source, Shore, and Waterfront. This structure offers visitors a diverse and comprehensive view of water.
Given the vastness of the subject, Burtynsky employed advanced technologies.
Breathtaking aerial shots—captured via helicopters and drones—offer stunning perspectives on water. This photo exhibition inspires awe and wonder, guiding visitors from fascination to awareness: the environment is a global concern, as urgent as our most basic needs.
